Apple Announces AirPods Max 2 with H2 Chip, Better Noise Cancelling and Live Translation

Apple has announced AirPods Max 2, updating its premium over-ear headphones with the H2 chip and several new software features.

The original AirPods Max launched in 2020 with Apple's H1 chip and a Lightning port. In 2024 Apple refreshed the headphones with a USB-C charging port, but the internal hardware remained largely the same.

The new 2026 AirPods Max 2 keep the same overall design again, but introduce the H2 chip, bringing several features that have previously already appeared in the latest AirPod Pros.

Key upgrades

The H2 chip enables several new listening features:

  • Adaptive Audio - automatically balances noise cancelling and transparency depending on the environment
  • Conversation Awareness - lowers music volume when you begin speaking to someone nearby
  • Voice Isolation - improves voice clarity during calls
  • Live Translation - translates conversations in real time using Apple Intelligence
  • Personalised Volume - adjusts listening levels based on your listening habits

Apple says the new model also delivers up to 1.5x more effective Active Noise Cancellation compared with the original AirPods Max.

Transparency mode has also been improved so outside sounds feel more natural when listening.

Sound improvements

AirPods Max 2 include a new high dynamic range amplifier, which Apple says delivers cleaner audio and more detailed sound.

The headphones support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected with the included USB-C cable.

Apple says this allows musicians and creators to record and mix using Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking in apps like Logic Pro.

Wireless audio latency has also been reduced, which should improve gaming and video playback.

Connectivity and battery

AirPods Max 2 support Bluetooth 5.3, an upgrade from Bluetooth 5.0 on the original AirPods Max.

Battery life remains up to 20 hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation enabled, unchanged from previous models.

Colours

AirPods Max 2 will be available in:

  • Midnight
  • Starlight
  • Orange
  • Purple
  • Blue

Price and availability

AirPods Max 2 start at $999 AUD.

Orders open 26th March, with retail availability expected in early April.
